S3 Savage 3D FAQ - By Pharaoh/ Alex Shall

OpenGL Driver Installation

The Savage 3D may have been slated by many magazines when it was first released, mainly because of its appalling drivers. Now that the drivers have improved considerably, it can put in a very good performance under GL Doom Legacy. However, the drivers on S3s site are old, the latest driver can be obtained from here instead. Just extract the drivers into a temporary directory and install them as instructed and that's it. Fortunately, the drivers include an OpenGL ICD which is installed into the /windows/system/ directory and works well with all games and programs, including GL Doom Legacy, so there is no need to copy a specific opengl32.dll file into your GL Doom Legacy directory, just run the program and it should work.

FAQ

Q The game crashes when loading with "'r_opengl.dll' could not be loaded"
A This error is caused by using the Savage3D Quake Mini-GL with GL Doom Legacy, just use the standard OpenGL ICD instead, which is installed by default with the latest drivers and is used by defualt.
Q The game quits to windows having just finished loading and just before playing
A This is caused by not having the latest Savage3D drivers, currently 6.13.27, get the latest Savage3D drivers from Savage World.

Tweaks

There are several tweaks which can be enabled for increasing the performance of the Savage3D under GL Doom Legacy, the best way to set them up and to try them is to download S3 Tweak, again from Savage World.
